When it comes to choosing the right SUV for your family, Nissan and Ford both offer competitive models. While the 2022 Nissan Armada has a lot to offer in the way of performance and technology, it is impossible not to discount the 2022 Ford Expedition. In terms of price, performance, cargo space, technology, and other features, there is a lot to love about both models.

As you shop for the newest SUV to meet your transportation needs, you’ve got a lot to consider. Here’s what you can expect from the new Armada and Expedition.

Price

First, let’s take a look at the starting price of each vehicle. The 2022 Nissan Armada has an MSRP of $48,900 for the base model. The SV trim begins at $52,900, and a premium SL model is available starting at $56,710. The most expensive model begins at $65,300. This price is comparable to similar vehicles.

The cheapest 2022 Ford Expedition starts at $51,080. If you choose to add the option for a 4-wheel drive, you can expect to spend a little more. If you choose the Platinum trim, you can expect to spend over $76,000. While this might seem steep, the price of the base model is on par with other options.

Performance

The Ford Expedition offers a twin-turbocharged 3.5 turbo V6 engine and 10-speed automatic transmission, and it is a faster vehicle than the Armada. Additionally, the Expedition gets better gas mileage. In part, this is because the engine turns off to save fuel when it is stopped. You have the power to turn off this feature and keep the engine running at all times if this is your preference. While these are great advantages, the engine gets just 380 horsepower, which is lower than the Nissan. Still, you’ll have access to standard rear-wheel drive as well as an option for all-wheel drive.

In comparison, the Nissan Armada offers a 5.6-liter Endurance V8 engine and 7-speed automatic transmission. You’ll get 400 horsepower out of the standard engine as well as rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive. The engine does not turn off when the vehicle is stopped like the Expedition, so you will likely use more fuel behind the wheel of this SUV. While this SUV might seem unassuming, a lot of power hides under the hood.

Towing Capacity

If you are trying to figure out which of these options is ideal for towing, you should consider that the Nissan Armada can tow 8,500 pounds at most. While the base model does not offer a way to ease trailer sway, the Armada SL and Premium trims do offer a way to ease the dangerous movements of anything you are towing. The Armada’s 7-speed transmission helps you tow with more power, and it also offers a Tow/Haul transmission mode for increased performance. At this time, no towing package seems to be available for this vehicle.

On the other hand, the Ford Expedition has a towing capacity of 9,300 pounds, so it’s a bit beefier in terms of towing capabilities. Additional equipment makes towing with the Expedition even easier. When it is used to tow, the 2022 Ford Expedition takes advantage of AdvanceTrac sensors, which help brake to counteract trailer sway. Kelly Blue Book speaks highly of the Expedition’s towing power.

Cargo & Seating

The 2022 Expedition offers 171.9 cubic feet of space in the cabin. You’ll find that the Expedition offers over an inch of extra headroom and two more inches of legroom in the front of the vehicle. In the second and third rows, you will still find plenty of legroom and hip room for each seat. Plus, the Expedition allows you to automatically lower your second and third rows of seats with the press of a button. The Expedition also offers a hands-free opening of the hatch for easier loading.

The 2022 Armada offers slightly less cabin space with 154.5 cubic feet. Ultimately, you end up with slightly less space behind your third seat than with similar SUVs. While the Armada’s cabin is a bit smaller in most ways, this is not necessarily a bad thing. Many drivers prefer a smaller SUV with the power and capabilities of a larger vehicle.

Technology

Which vehicle comes off as more technologically advanced? The Nissan Armada is loaded with cruise control, a hands-free phone system, a navigation system, and even Internet access. The vehicle offers a push-button engine start with Bluetooth wireless technology and keyless entry. This vehicle offers all the tech features you would expect from a 2022 model.

You will also find some of the technological features of the Ford Expedition appealing. The 2022 Expedition is equipped with a Sync 4 option and a 15.5-inch touchscreen. The tech also allows different drivers to create different profiles. Additional technology includes a navigation system, cruise control system, push-button engine start, USB port, and real-time traffic information.

Safety

Both the Expedition and the Armada offer great safety features. For instance, the Ford Expedition offers seatbelts that inflate upon collision, which helps prevent seatbelt injuries and whiplash. Your new Armada will also offer a lane departure warning as well as rearview cameras, driver alerts, and a blind-spot warning system.

Warranty

With the 2022 Nissan Armada, the warranty lasts three years or 36,000 miles. The 2022 Ford Expedition offers the same warranty, so there is not much of a difference here. While this is not the longest warranty on the market, it is not abnormal for similar SUVs.

Ottawa Overlook Backcountry

Three Ottawa Overlook Backcountry sites sit within the Brecksville Reservation on the 1,400-mile Buckeye Trail. If you’re interested in backpacking through Ohio’s beautiful landscape, these sites offer a great place to stay. The Brecksville Reservation features a group kitchen area and food storage location for hanging your foodstuffs while staying at these sites. Each of these amenities is about 100 yards from the campsites, and the food storage and kitchen areas are about 100 yards from one another. This facilitates the leave-no-trace camping principle. These backcountry sites are about a 0.25-hike from the Ottawa Point Picnic Area.

If you’re new to backpacking, you can sign up for a backpacking program with Cleveland MetroParks. You will meet with an instructor before you depart to discuss your meal planning, packing list, and a planned itinerary that’s anywhere from one to five nights. You’re then provided with equipment for your trip. Additional programs are available that dive deeper into topics like backcountry cooking, land navigation, and additional backpacking skills.

Hide-A-Way Lakes Campground

Hide-A-Way Lakes in Ashtabula, Ohio, is just 5 miles from Lake Erie. The campground covers 35 acres and includes five ponds. The campground store provides ice, firewood, food, beverages, camping supplies, and even ice cream. Indoor showers are available. You’ll find ample opportunities for recreation, including:

• Horseshoe pits.
• Basketball courts.
• Swimming pool.
• Fishing and a fish cleaning station.
• Game room.
• Movie rentals.

Hide-A-Way Lakes has several campsite options, including primitive tent camping, tent camping with water and electricity, RV camping with water and electricity, and RV camping with a full hookup. The campground offers weekly and seasonal rates for extended stays.

Punderson State Park

Punderson State Park offers a broad range of activities. Setting up camp here is an outstanding way to settle in and take time to enjoy it all. The park features seven hiking trails spanning a total of 11 miles. These range from the easy 0.5-mile boardwalk trail to the moderate 2.2-mile Erie Trail. Punderson Lake offers great fishing opportunities for catfish, largemouth bass, trout, and bluegill. A 600-foot beach edges the lake with designated swimming areas. Other recreational amenities include:

• Boat ramps.
• 18-hole disc golf course.
• 18-hole Punderson Manor Golf Course.
• Seven picnic facilities.

Maple Lakes Campground

Maple Lakes Campground goes above and beyond to provide entertainment and activities for its campers. You’ll regularly find special events like movies, hayrides, and holiday parties. Additional amenities include:

• Swimming pool.
• Playground.
• Baseball and softball fields.
• Basketball and volleyball courts.
• Off-leash pet area.
• Laundry facilities.
• Restrooms.
• Showers.

The campground offers both RV and tent campsites with anything from water and a 15-amp hookup to a full 50-amp hookup with water and sewer.

West Branch State Park

West Branch State Park features a link to the Buckeye Trail via a 2-mile spur from the campground. The park also features 14 miles of its own hiking trails and nearly 20 miles of bridle trails. The Michael J. Kirwan Reservoir covers 2,650 acres and features seasonal docks and a marina with boat rentals. Anglers can find walleye, catfish, muskellunge, largemouth and smallmouth bass, and bluegill in the waters.

A 700-foot sandy beach offers ample space for swimming and sunning. The beach features restrooms, outdoor showers, changing booths, picnic tables, vending machines, and charcoal grills. Other recreational features include:

• 18-hold disc golf course.
• Dog park with pond.
• Playgrounds.
• Volleyball court.
• Game and sporting equipment rentals.

The campground features heated showers, flush toilets, and a laundry facility. Most sites offer a full hook-up or 50-amp electric. There is one non-electric site. A few lakeside campsites have carry-in access for your boat. Primitive bridle camping is available in a separate area.

Located just slightly west of downtown Akron, Ohio, the Akron Zoo has a variety of unique animal exhibits and fun things the whole family can enjoy. From exotic enclosures to exciting seasonal events, there’s always something exciting going on at the zoo, which is open between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. from April through October and between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. from November through March. Akron Zoo Animal Exhibits

When visiting the Akron Zoo, you can enjoy watching rare mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, invertebrates, and even carnivorous plants. In the Legends of the Wild exhibit, for example, you can learn how jaguars got their spots and observe the exotic and ferocious snow leopard in its natural habitat. There’s also Penguin Point, an exhibit containing a group of friendly and curious Humboldt penguins.

For lovers of North American animals, the Grizzly Ridge exhibit features bald eagles, coyotes, red wolves, turkeys, river otters, and the major attraction: muscular, brown grizzly bears. The zoo also has a butterfly garden where visitors can learn more about monarch butterflies, plus an exhibit containing Komodo dragons and massive Galapagos tortoises. The Zoo Gardens hosts over 7,000 native species of plants, flowers, and other fascinating natural wonders. Nearby, the Curious Creatures exhibit features numerous sea creatures and terrestrial invertebrates, including electric eels, a Giant Pacific octopus, and leaf-cutter ants.

Rise and Shine Safari

At the Rise and Shine Safari, you and your family get an opportunity to explore the zoo and learn more about the animals before it opens with a knowledgeable staff member. The interactive experience includes getting to watch zookeepers engage with the lemurs in their enclosures, visiting the habitat of the acrobatic red panda sisters, and observing the lion night yard where the zoo’s lions rest their heads. It also includes a behind-the-scenes experience in the grizzly bear building. The price is $75 per person, with a minimum requirement of two guests.

The Get Closer Experience

The Get Closer Experience also gives you the opportunity to interact with some of the zoo’s most popular animals and speak with a zookeeper. Choose between interacting with the Galapagos tortoises and giving them a shower, grooming some goats, or having fun with animals like armadillos, porcupines, and kinkajous. The price for these experiences is $45 per person, with a minimum of two guests, plus a maximum of four guests for the tortoise experience and six for the other two.

Wild World Animal Show

Make your trip to the zoo extra special by attending the Wild World Animal Show, a 25-minute production where a variety of animal species get to show off what they can do in front of an audience. You can find the animal show inside Nature’s Theater at Lehner Family Gardens. It features a variety of furry, scaly, feathery, and strange creatures from all around the world as they jump, climb, and fly through the air. It’s also a great opportunity to ask the zoo’s staff questions about the animals on display.

Special Events

Throughout the year, the zoo holds a variety of fun, seasonal events for all ages. In October, the zoo hosts Boo at the Zoo, a one-of-a-kind Halloween experience where visitors get the chance to dress up and collect tasty treats from 12 themed stations all throughout the zoo. All ages are welcome to purchase a ticket, and special treats are available for individuals with allergies. During the holidays, the whole family can enjoy Wild Lights, an event that features over one million Christmas lights strung around the zoo and includes many creative photo opportunities.

Adults can enjoy Brew at the Zoo, a special event occurring a few times throughout the year where you can mingle in the zoo after-hours while sipping beer and wine. One event ticket includes eight sample tastings. Seltzers n’ Shells is another after-hours, adult-only event that celebrates World Turtle Day by allowing participants to toast with hard seltzers and ciders from local breweries and discuss the importance of conservation with zookeepers. It also includes special animal appearances and a turtle shower.

During Summer Safari — the zoo’s biggest fundraiser of the year — adults can enjoy encounters with the animals, drinks, delicious food from some of Ohio’s top caterers, and live music. You can also participate in a raffle and silent auction with prizes that include animal art and behind-the-scenes tours of the zoo. Other adult-only events occurring after the zoo closes include Tequila n’ Tigers and Wild for Wine. On community appreciation days, all Summit County residents can enjoy the zoo free of admission.

Akron Zoo Cost of Admission and Membership

Admission for Akron Zoo’s summer season is $14 for adults, $12 for senior citizens, and $11 for children aged three to 14. Children aged two years old and under get in for free. If you want to enjoy the zoo year-round, there’s also an option to become a member.
