Looking for a fun way to get the whole family out of the house? In Cleveland, there’s no shortage of activities that kids and adults alike can enjoy. Whether you’re hoping to spend the day outside, learn something new, or explore a one-of-a-kind attraction, Cleveland’s got just the thing for you. Here are a few of our favorite family-friendly activities to do and places to visit in and around the Cleveland area:
Hiking

If you’re searching for an outdoor activity to help keep the whole family fit, consider a hike. Cleveland’s natural beauty is filled with great places to go hike, explore nature, and picnic with the family.
One of our favorite local spots is the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, where you can choose from over 125 miles of trails designed for hikers of all abilities. Getting a little tired of all the physical activity? Enjoy a pleasant break aboard the Cuyahoga scenic railroad or a picnic in the park. Cuyahoga Valley National Park also features other fun activities designed specifically for kids, like quest hunts along the canals and audio exhibits.
We’re also big fans of spending family time at the Holden Arboretum. One of the largest arboreta and botanical gardens in the US, the Holden Arboretum has a range of hiking trails through woodland forests, around lakes, and in gardens with flowers in bloom. They also have a range of programs and exhibits that cater to kids, like summer camps and bird-watching.
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Since 1986, Cleveland’s been the go-to spot for locals and tourists to learn more about rock and roll. Located at 1100 E 9th Street, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame allows you to learn about the history of this music genre, view artifacts from some of the biggest icons in rock music, and even start your own rock band through interactive exhibits.
In addition to browsing all the delights of the museum itself, visitors can eat in the cafe, wander the gift shop, and attend special live musical performances. With seven floors and an array of rotating exhibits, there’s sure to be something for every family member to enjoy. Visitors of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame can choose between several ticketing and membership options.
Beaches
Looking for an activity that’s exciting for the kids and relaxing for the adults? Cleveland’s beaches offer beautiful scenery, glistening waters, and fun.
Families can choose from several great beaches in the greater Cleveland area, including Edgewater Park in the northwestern part of the region. This 240-acre park includes two beaches, a marina, and a yacht club. Take a swim in the water, go cycling along the bike path, fish from the pier, or sail your boat. In the summer months, you can rent paddleboats, rowboats, canoes, kayaks, and other water vehicles from a range of nearby shops.
Want to drive east instead? Then check out Headlands Beach State Park, where you can find the longest stretch of sandy beach in the entire state of Ohio. Whether you want to swim in or just admire the water, you’re sure to enjoy the stunning sight of Lake Erie at this park. If your family wants to go for a stroll, consider a walk along the boardwalk or an exploration of some of the nature trails.
Cleveland Metroparks Zoo
A popular destination for local and tourist families alike, the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo on 3900 Wildlife Way makes a great adventure, whether it’s your first or one-hundredth visit. this zoo gives visitors the chance to explore a range of animals in diverse habitats, including those in the Rainforest, African Savannah, Waterfowl Lake and Australian Adventure.
The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is rather large, so get on your good walking shoes and bring or rent strollers for the little ones. If you get tired of walking, they do have a tram that can take you from the top to the bottom of the zoo. Other attractions at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo include the Scenic Railroad Track, the gift shop, and a food court.
A Christmas Story House
Remember the movie A Christmas Story? The actual house from the film has been restored and is open year-round right here in Cleveland. At A Christmas Story House on 3159 W 11th Street, guests can purchase tickets to wander the rooms during the day. You can even book an overnight stay and sleep in Ralphie and Randie’s bedroom. Be sure to also check out the A Christmas Story Museum located right across the street, which features real props and costumes from the film, along with a gift shop.
Cleveland Museum of Natural History
If you’re looking for a more educational adventure, stop by 1 Wade Oval Drive and see the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Whether you’re interested in exploring the planets, getting up close and personal with the dinosaurs, or learning more about diverse ecosystems, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History’s got you covered. The museum’s permanent and special exhibitions provide visitors with the chance to see over four million specimens in both indoor and outdoor spaces.
If you want a bit of a break, check out the museum gift shop or pause at the cafe for a bite. Be sure to also keep an eye on the museum’s event page, as they often hold family-friendly special events like curator lead field trips, family hikes through the marshes, and opportunities to talk with real-life scientists who work in a range of fields.
Squire’s Castle
Want to let your child be royalty for a day? They can at Squire’s Castle on 2844 River Road. This castle was built by a squire from England in the 1890s. Visitors today can both walk the grounds outside or explore the spacious interior. If you want to spend an afternoon here, consider picnicking on the lawns or playing a game in the grass. There’s also a nearby trailhead if you’d like to get in a little physical activity.
